Icon Lock-iT XP relies on the NTFS file system supported by Windows NT, 2000, and XP to perform some of the new features, including:
- Preventing deletion or modification of locked files
- Preventing locked folder contents from being viewed
- Preventing other users from locking files you own
It is highly recommended that you switch to the NTFS format to utilize all of the advanced features of Icon Lock-iT XP.
To determine your file system type:
- Open My Computer
- Right-click your hard drive (usually c:) and select Properties
- Towards the top of the window, under Label, the File System type is listed(NTFS, FAT32, or FAT).
To convert a drive to NTFS after previously installing XP:
Windows XP, 2000, and NT include a command line utility, convert.exe, that will convert a FAT or FAT32 drive to NTFS. Note, however, that once you convert to NTFS from FAT, you cannot convert back without reformatting.
- Open a command line window (start->run->type in "cmd" and hit enter.)
- Type in "convert /FS:NTFS" For example, the command line for converting drive c: -> "convert c: /FS:NTFS"
- Please read the article below on using convert.exe for complete instructions.
